Why is Skull Face’s motivation so flimsy, and just what was he doing behind-the-scenes during Operation Snake Eater? What was up with Snake not saying a word during that giant monologue/musical interlude? What happened to the Camp Omega return that Kojima promised last year? What’s the deal with the Third Child? Is he really Psycho Mantis? Where did Eli and Sahelanthropus go? (Oh, right, that part wasn’t finished.) Because MGS games stories should not be taken seriously due to this fact that they were always overhyped, overrated, inconsistent and stupid. But I was curious to see what everyone thinks of the story, whether you're a new fan or if you've played every game in the series. None of this is to say that the game is bad. None of that is really present too often in MGSV, and when it is those moments are fleeting.

Most media that ends "without an ending" has done something to earn that, be it very well written dialogue, characters, plot, setting. What a letdown.Īll of this culminates in a story that is wholly unsatisfying and less engaging than every other MGS game. Not years of abuse, neglect, or even taunting. We learn that he hates Big Boss.because he thinks Big Boss beat him up a couple times.

Code Talker? Another info dump, albeit with a healthy dose of that classic Metal Gear brand of science fiction, which I have always liked. We know too much for her to be cool and mysterious, but we know too little for her to be a fully fleshed out person.

Quiet's character is altogether underdeveloped, and when she finally does speak up it's disappointing that we don't get to learn more about her. Some people I know can't even tell them apart because they both do the same thing over the radio, albeit with different lines. He had more character in Peace Walker and he had more character in MGS1 (when it was just Liquid doing an impersonation!).

Miller is just bitter the entire game, which is a bit more understandable in his case, but still just makes him another uninteresting info dump. He's just an info dump for the entire game, and not a very interesting one at that, save for the sole fact that he's Ocelot. He is shown doing his trademark pistol twirling once in the entire game (and once in the multiplayer trailer) and only a single reference is made to his stupidity in MGS3 with the engravings. Ocelot barely acts like the flamboyant Ocelot we know from MGS1, 2 and 3. The characters are all.well, lacking character. This is all such a shame because the cinematography in the game is better than most movies. The story goes from a straightforward revenge story to putting a twist at the end because this is Metal Gear and there has to be a twist. He has a tragic backstory, sure, but we've gotten that from nearly every game in the series, and his is far from the worst. Skullface isn't a very interesting villain either. In the end, the entire plot of MGSV is used to plug a plot hole in between Metal Gear 1 and 2, but those games are so simplistic that it didn't really need to be plugged.

This also leads to the weakest boss fights in the series. The idea of language as a weapon? Brilliant! Its actual use in the story? Zombies. There are some ideas behind the plot that are cool, but are not actually handled well. The plot is weaker than any other Metal Gear Solid game, with the possible exception of MGS4, but even MGS4 wrapped up a ton of plot lines. Does it earn the right to be "unfinished?" In my opinion, no. So even if you do think MGSV is unfinished because of Konami (which I do), let's just set that aside for now and look at the merits of the story itself.

It's been done in books, movies, TV shows, even music. Cutting off the ending to a piece of media in order to get more emotion out of the audience is nothing new.
